If money is tight but you want to stay in the LGPS, you can pay lower contributions, in the 50/50 section.
This option allows you to pay half of the contributions you would normally pay, and build up half of the normal pension. You can join the 50/50 section at any time.
You can use the Contributions calculator to see how joining the 50/50 section would affect your take-home pay.
If you’re an LGPS member in more than one job, you can pay the lower contribution in any or all of those jobs.
Paying the lower contribution doesn’t affect any death benefits payable from the LGPS.
The 50/50 option is designed to be a short-term solution only. We will enrol you back into the main section of the LGPS roughly every three years.
We’ll also put you back into the main section of the LGPS if you are on leave without pay. If you want to stay in the 50/50 section, you must let your employer know again.
You can also choose to move back to the main section at any time. Your employer will move you from the next pay period.
If you’re paying extra pension contributions, these will stop if you join the 50/50 section, unless they were to make up contributions from time you were away from work.
